This seal is located at the top of your steering box and prevents oil from leaking out of the system. Over the years - the rubber can dry out and crack - leading to a slow oil leak. You can recognize it by damp spots under the car or a looser steering feel. Replace this ring (OEM 311 415 277) preventatively during your steering box maintenance. Combine this with a new oil seal at the bottom and fresh steering oil for the complete picture.
